The Charismatic Movement in Taiwan from 1945 to 1995 Protestant Christianity in Twentieth-Century Taiwan, with a Focus on the Evangelical Force from 1945 to 1990

Abstract

[To account for the strong Evangelical overtone within Protestant Christianity in Taiwan, this chapter explores the theology of non-Pentecostal Protestant groups present in Taiwan before and after 1945. An enlightened evangelical spirit manifested through English, Scottish, and Canadian Presbyterian missions active in Taiwan from 1865 to 1945 is identified. This chapter then discusses ways in which “defending (a fundamentalist-bent) Christianity” and “opposing communism” became intricately linked in postwar Taiwan, after the retreat of Chiang Kai-shek’s government from China to Taiwan in 1948–1949. Carl McIntire’s influence is highlighted. The chapter uses the change of Statement of Faith of the interdenominational China Evangelical Seminary (Taipei) concerning Scripture in the first few months of its foundation in 1970 as an example to demonstrate how evangelical groups in postwar Taiwan were heavily influenced by fundamentalist sentiments.]
