The Founding Fathers, Education, and “The Great Contest”: Concerning Education in Pennsylvania [The author of Freedom leaves us few clues as to his identity. Surprisingly, the stand-alone pseudonym “Freedom” does not appear anywhere in the largest modern databases of Early Republican writing.1 What we do know of Freedom is that his essay focuses primarily on higher learning, with an unusual emphasis on (and familiarity with) medical education. It is also reasonable to assume that Freedom lived in, or near, Pennsylvania, given that the essay chooses to focus on that state specifically. His knowledge of major authors on education, college curricula, and the writings of American polymath Hugh Williamson and Scottish physician John Gregory places him within the circle of Philadelphia intellectuals who orbited the American Philosophical Society and the College of Physicians of Philadelphia. Despite searches for Freedom’s spidery handwriting among APS regulars and the correspondents of Thomas Jefferson, his identity eludes us.
