[This chapter returns attention to China during the first half of the twentieth century. It inquires into how the caterpillar fungus became an object of inquiry in science communication and mycological, chemical and pharmacological research. With the transmission of modern science and the rise of scientific research in China, the caterpillar fungus also partook in the project of scientification in association with Chinese medicinal substances. The changing perceptions of the caterpillar fungus in Chinese society engaged with the reconstruction of Chinese materia medica, providing a dynamic perspective on intellectual plurality and epistemological entanglements.]
