[This chapter interrogates Irish medics’ motivations for participating in the First World War. Using a vast array of source material and statistical analysis, Durnin examines the socio-economic profile of the Irish medical recruit to provide further insight into the motivations behind their involvement in the war. This chapter is also concerned with the roles and experiences of Irish medical personnel within the British Army medical services’ ‘medical machine’. Through an analysis of letters, postcards and diaries, Durnin explores the wartime experiences of Irish medical officers and nurses in their roles in Field Ambulance (FA) divisions, Casualty Clearing Stations and war hospitals.]
