Abstract

[In this chapter I deal with the issue of employment trajectories of people with disabilities in the context of the Greek labour market. People with disabilities are not just handicapped by physical barriers. They are also handicapped by social obstacles, such as the attitudes or beliefs held by other people, disabled or not, as well as by institutional settings limiting their rights whose legitimacy then is fully questioned. Ι use the concepts of biographical disruption and of embodiment in order to highlight the social-relational and corporeal nature of disability and to depict it as an experience directly related to all the stages of a person’s life course emphasizing the employment aspect. Based on qualitative research findings the analysis of the selected narratives brought to the fore a number of dimensions and important parameters that play a key role in creating and reproducing the barriers that people with disabilities face in accessing employment as well as while working along with the almost complete absence of provision of the so-called reasonable adaptation of the labour market to their needs.]
