The Psychology of Quality of LifeEffects of Demographic Factors on Wellbeing

The Psychology of Quality of Life: Effects of Demographic Factors on Wellbeing [This chapter discusses the effects of other demographic factors (age, gender, marriage, ethnicity and minority status, education, etc.) on subjective aspects of quality of life (hedonic wellbeing, life satisfaction, and eudaimonia). With respect to age, I break down the wellbeing research in terms of the various stages of the life cycle (i.e., infancy, childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and late adulthood). Research on gender and wellbeing is discussed. Specifically, I highlight the research on the moderating factors that explain the conditions in which men and women differ in their wellbeing. I also cover the varied explanations of the gender-wellbeing link. Wellbeing research is also discussed in relation to marital status, family composition, and the family life cycle. Similarly, the research on the link between ethnicity/minority status and wellbeing is discussed in light of three streams of research, namely racial-ethnic discrimination, racial-ethnic identity, acculturation/enculturation, and racial/ethnic socialization. The wellbeing effects of other demographic factors (education, type of work, etc.) are also briefly reviewed.] http://www.deepdyve.com/assets/images/DeepDyve-Logo-lg.png

Abstract

[This chapter discusses the effects of other demographic factors (age, gender, marriage, ethnicity and minority status, education, etc.) on subjective aspects of quality of life (hedonic wellbeing, life satisfaction, and eudaimonia). Research on gender and wellbeing is discussed. Specifically, I highlight the research on the moderating factors that explain the conditions in which men and women differ in their wellbeing. Similarly, the research on the link between ethnicity/minority status and wellbeing is discussed in light of three streams of research, namely racial-ethnic discrimination, racial-ethnic identity, acculturation/enculturation, and racial/ethnic socialization. The wellbeing effects of other demographic factors (education, type of work, etc.) are also briefly reviewed.]
