[To the best of my recollection, I first met Hermínio Martins in a dark, gloomy building not far from the centre of Leeds in late October 1961. This was the building in which the Department of Social Studies was at that time located. This first meeting with Hermínio gave me some immediate comfort that I had not left the London School of Economics for the academic ‘sticks’. (I had been constrained to move from London to Leeds for rather private reasons and been encouraged by the offer of a postgraduate scholarship from the University of Leeds.)]
