[This is an introductory chapter that provides an overview of the motivation for the volume, a presentation of the case used in the study, Italy, a description of the objectives and research questions and the contents of each chapter. The chapter discusses the importance of studying the allocation of time to the domestic sphere in a context of low gender equality and explains why the life course approach adopted in the volume can provide valuable insights to our understanding of inequalities in housework, childcare and adult care in Italy.]
