Abstract

[We live in tumultuous times. Old presumptions on social, environmental and political priorities are being challenged. Regulators are responding accordingly. Non-financial reporting, social auditing and stakeholder accountability are new boardroom catchwords. Increasingly, discrimination, bias and prejudicial behaviour are called out. This book informs on the imperative conditions required to implement a diversity and inclusion objective effectively. We highlight the importance of understanding the human factor, the nature of bias and prejudice, discrimination and exclusion, without which governance measures will be ineffectual. To pursue diversity and inclusion is not to satisfy the demands of strangers; it is to create a world of potential that will bring long-term benefits and success. Organisations must navigate their way through this confusion of priorities and conflicting interests. Respect for employees and other stakeholders is an uncontested concept. Still, introspection is needed to understand the influence that each corporation has on its internal culture and external environment. The conclusions to be reached are neither simple nor easy. To be open to continuous challenge and learning is a rich, but demanding path to tread. We can reach for the stars, but the universe is ever-expanding.]
