Abstract

[D&I is an institutional and individual challenge. To effect inclusion, we must acknowledge our responsibilities, but also understand the instinct to look away from injustice. Generally, curiosity drives discovery, learning and innovation. Yet, our human preference is for the status quo; to bolster our blinkered worldview with prejudiced confirmation bias. Understanding how our perceptions are skewed by the way we process information requires an acceptance that what we see is not necessarily the same as what we observe; that our instincts are to turn away from reality-shifting diversity in favour of predictability and stability. Accepting diversity is to scrutinise presumed truths, to be willing to change and act on new knowledge. The rejection of alternative perspectives generates mistrust. The privileged maintain their status by denying the potential of the marginalised, while the marginalised doubt access to fair outcomes. Integration without trust demands significant concessions by the outgroup, leading to conflict-avoiding code-switching and the suppression of self-expression and creativity. The school of positive psychology offers enablement and fulfilment of the individual. Can it do so in diverse populations?]
