Abstract

[This chapter examines the relationship between biomedicine and new forms of subjectivity in the post-genomic era. I use the example of the OncotypeDX® breast cancer test, the value of which is based on its clinical value for planning personalized treatment, to discuss critically the ways of accessing personalized medicine, and specifically molecular tests like the OncotypeDX®, that the public health system in Greece provides for cancer patients. The stratification of cancer patients based on molecular data is not confined only to the biomarkers that construct the ‘biological body’ and define which bodies are eligible for specific treatments; it is further embedded in a regime of ‘ethopolitics’ that builds a framework in which cancer patients are responsible for their health and the knowledge of their body at a molecular level. It is also strongly related to socioeconomic aspects such as the age and the economic profile of the patient.]
