Chapter Nine Explanatory Notes The Armed Conflict Survey provides analysis and data on active armed conflicts involving states and non-state armed groups across the world. The data in the current edition is accurate according to IISS assessments as at January 2016, unless specified. Inclusion of a territory, country, state or group in The Armed Conflict Survey does not imply legal recognition or indicate support for that entity. General Arrangement and Contents The introduction provides an overview of some of the key themes of the book. Next, four analytical essays focus on select cross-national trends: pessimism and planning in armed conflict; the political economy of violent conflict; the threat from foreign fighters; and the shifting roles of female combatants. A graphical section follows, presenting a number of conflict maps and graphics. The sections providing data and analysis on each conflict are organised according to region. The book closes with a reference section. The Chart of Conflict The Chart of Conflict shows the location and intensity of armed conflicts and terrorist attacks.
