In 1584, a female apothecary in Padua named Camilla Erculiani published a series of philo- sophical letters between herself and two male correspondents. The exchange gave Erculiani’s unique perspective on matters of natural philosophy, theology, and medicine, and it show- cased her grounding in the writings of Aristotle, Plato, and Galen as well as her familiarity with the Bible. Her remarkable publication was one of the few texts on natural philosophy from a woman writer in early modern Europe. Published in Poland in a small print run, it (probably intentionally) reached a limited audience in her own day and, even so, got her into trouble with the Inquisition. Now this excellent English edition allows modern readers to discover what their early modern counterparts may have missed.
