Anothe r related observation has to d o with hearin g of people's experience s in analysis with othe r analysts who m I know person­ ally, o r who m I've hear d speak, o r whose writings I've read . I a m s o ofte n surprised by a discrepanc y between wha t I hea r fro m the patient s or ex-patients an d what I would have expected on the basi s of th e analysts' forma l o r informal presentations. I now feel it's a very risky business to try to predict ho w analysts actually work . Incidentally, I assum e th e same is tru e of me.
