Abstract In this special focus issue of Arts Education Policy Review, authors from different disciplinary backgrounds contribute ideas related to the role of the arts in school improvement. This set of articles mirrors the multiple concerns related to school improvement and the arts and provides a means of triangulating the topic. By “turning the prism” on school improvement, this collection of manuscripts illuminates how arts education interacts with a variety of related accountability narratives. In this introduction to the issue, we discuss why arts education is relevant to school improvement conversations. After previewing the authors’ contributions to this journal issue, we offer considerations on the positioning of the arts in educational policy.
